tris walked down the corridor toward the room dj pointed to. Nessa was there. Her mouth was suddenly dry and her heart pounded nearly hard enough to be heard. What would she say?

She looked bad she knew. Her face was carrying a bruise on one cheek and a swelling over one eye. Both eyes were red and swollen from all the crying. She didn't care. She just wanted to see Nessa. She would bring these things her Lord left in their room. Then what? She didn't know.

She was there. She raised a fist to knock and the door opened. Nessa! tris just swallowed and stood there looking into Nessa's red and grey eyes. She didn't look so good either. It was a minute before she could raise her hand with the bag of things she gathered. "You left these my Lord."

Nessa looked down at the bag then took it from the girl. She was sad. She hadn't slept. "tris, will you talk to me lass?" Her voice was gravelly.

"Yes my Lord" tris answered.

Nessa tossed the bag on a chair. She pulled tris into the room and shut the door. "I want you to sit here by the fire with me."

tris nearly choked with the hope that was in her. She let Nessa lead her to a chair by the fire. She started to drop to the floor by the chair where her Lord would sit. Nessa held her up and turned her to sit in the chair. The wench was surprised. The chair was nice but the floor was her place. "But my Lord..."

"No tris. You will not be sitting at my feet and don't... I mean ... I am not your Lord." Nessa felt something inside tighten. She saw the look of astonishment on tris' face and knew the lass felt the same twisting inside.

tris thought she would rather have another slap than hear those words from Nessa. She watched Nessa drop to the chair beside her. "Why?" she could barely whisper. "Why are you doing this? Why are you... different now?"

Nessa leaned forward and took tris' hands in her own. She spoke in a strained voice as if she were holding back. "Listen to me lass. I know it is hard to do but you have to start living your life without me ruling every move. I promise I will be close. I don't own you. I want you to be free lass." Nessa had to tell tris more. It felt like clay in her throat. The girl looked so hurt.

"I just don't know how to be any other way tris. I have to take some time to think about things. I want you to have time too. I don't think anyone ever asked you what you wanted ever. Will you think about it please?"

tris decided she would definitely have to think about it because right now none of it made sense to her. She had never been "free" in her life. She could see that Nessa had feelings for her. She could see that this was hard for the Warrior to do. "But I'll miss you." she cried.

"I'll be right here."

"Right here in another room... in another bed." A sob caught in the girl's throat. "Don't you want me anymore?"

"Yes tris, I want you. I just need time. And I want you to see what it is like to make your own choices. I believe we both need this. Why can't it be a good thing for us?" Nessa looked almost pleadingly at tris.

The lass was working on comprehending just what the dark Warrior wanted. She was very sad. But she was something else that she couldn't quite put her finger on. She was almost excited about maybe doing something on her own without having to ask permission or worry that she would be whipped. Nessa did say she would be close.

tris stood up. Nessa watched her and stood slowly. "I'll go now then... Nessa." She never said such a thing to anyone ever. That simple statement was a display of her choice making. She walked to the door. No Warrior stopped her. She opened it and turned to look at the still Lord. "I am going to do what you want. I don't know what it will mean for... us. But I will do it because you want it." She couldn't bring herself to smile. "Nessa?"

"Yes lass."

"Will you ever sleep with me again?"

Nessa smiled at last. "We'll have to see now won't we?" She winked in a way that spoke volumes.
